At OR Coffee Roasters, we believe that knowing the journey of your coffee makes every sip more meaningful. Kenya Kii AB comes from the Kii factory, managed by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society, which supports about 1,215 coffee farmers. Coffee farming here began in 1953, with the average farmer cultivating roughly 400 trees on about one-third of a hectare.

The cooperative operates three mills—Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi—and is overseen by a democratically elected board of seven members. With 25 permanent staff and partnerships like Sustainable Management Services Limited, the co-op focuses on quality improvement projects to raise both cup quality and yield. Farmers deliver freshly picked cherries daily, ensuring the coffee’s freshness and quality.

2. The Kirinyaga Region

The Kirinyaga region is located in the northeast of Mount Kenya, one of the most fertile coffee-growing areas in the country. The volcanic soils and high altitudes provide the ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica beans. The region’s distinct climate and terroir contribute to the unique flavor characteristics found in this coffee, with its sweet, fruity notes and vibrant acidity.

At the heart of the region is the Kii Mill, where the cherries are meticulously processed using the washed method, resulting in a coffee that’s exceptionally clean and bright. With each cup, you are supporting the smallholder farmers of this community who rely on coffee production for their livelihood.

Once cherries arrive at the factory, they are carefully sorted and depulped. The beans undergo an overnight fermentation before being washed with fresh river water. Afterwards, they are dried under full sun, preserving the coffee’s bright acidity and velvety body. This traditional washed processing method highlights the clean and sweet flavor profile that Kenya Kii AB is known for.
