The Dynamic Duo is Sage's Dual Boiler espresso machine sold together with the Smart Grinder Pro. It is the Sage for people who want to do every step themselves: you grind, dose, tamp and steam by hand, on a 58 mm portafilter, with a pressure gauge in front of you and a separate boiler for the steam.
That makes it the opposite of the Oracle Dual Boiler, which has the same two-boiler idea but grinds, doses, tamps and textures the milk for you. The choice between the two is less about the cup and more about how much of the work you want to do.
Our verdict
- Strongest point: a dual boiler with PID, a heated group head, pre-infusion and a pressure gauge. These are the controls you find on café machines, in a home format.
- Who it is for: home baristas who want to learn espresso properly, steam milk themselves and see what they change.
- Pick another model if: you want milk drinks at the touch of a button (the Oracle Dual Boiler or the Oracle Jet), or you have little counter space and want the grinder built in (the Barista Pro).
- The caveat: these are two appliances. Side by side, Sage's dimensions add up to about 60 cm of counter width.
The Dual Boiler: two boilers and a heated group head
The espresso boiler is PID-controlled, and a separate steam boiler gives you steam whenever you need it, so you pull the shot and steam the milk at the same time. The heated group head is under PID control too. Sage's user guide sets the shot temperature at 93 °C by default and lets you change it from 86 to 96 °C.
The 15 bar Italian pump starts each shot with low-pressure pre-infusion, then extracts at 9 bar. In the menu you can set the pre-infusion length and power; Sage's guide suggests 5 to 15 seconds and a power of 55 to 65 as a starting range.
Shot control, gauge and shot clock
You choose between volumetric and timed shot control, with 1 CUP, 2 CUP or a manual shot. The presets run 25 seconds for one cup and 30 seconds for two, and Sage names 25 to 30 seconds as the optimum shot time. The pressure gauge shows what happens during extraction, and the shot clock on the LCD shows how long the last shot took. Together they tell you more than any taste note on its own: if the shot ran in 18 seconds, you know where to start.
58 mm portafilter, dose and tamping
The stainless steel portafilter is 58 mm and takes a 22 g dose. You get single and dual wall baskets for one and two cups: single wall for freshly ground coffee, dual wall for pre-ground. Sage includes an integrated tamper and the 58 mm Razor dosing tool, which trims the coffee bed to the same height every time. The user guide asks for about 10 to 15 kg of tamping pressure; consistency matters more than the exact number.
The Smart Grinder Pro
The grinder has stainless steel conical burrs and 60 settings. Sage reserves the fine settings 1 to 30 for espresso and suggests 12 as a starting point. You program the grind time in steps of 0.2 seconds, and the LCD shows grind setting, grind time and the number of shots. Two cradles, one for 50 to 54 mm and one for 58 mm, let you grind straight into the portafilter; with a cradle in place, the maximum is two shots.
The same grinder also grinds for filter: settings 46 to 54 for drip filter and 55 to 60 for French press, into the grinds container with lid.
Our baristas' view, as on the product page: the Smart Grinder Pro handles espresso blends and medium roasts well. If you mostly drink light-roasted single origins, a dedicated espresso grinder gives you finer control.
Steam and milk
There is no automatic milk system: you texture milk yourself with the steam wand, fed by the steam boiler at 130 °C according to Sage's product page. A 480 ml stainless steel milk jug is in the box. Wipe and purge the wand after every milk drink; if the tip blocks, the cleaning tool has a pin for it.
Living with it
- Daily: purge and wipe the steam wand, rinse the portafilter, empty the drip tray after use or when "Empty Me!" appears on the display.
- Cleaning cycle: the display shows "CLEAN ME!" after 200 extractions. The cycle uses the cleaning disc and a sachet of The Group Head Cleaner, which Sage lists for the Dual Boiler, in the 1 CUP basket and takes 370 seconds.
- Descaling: the Dual Boiler has its own descale menu. The machine must cool for at least 4 hours, the boilers are drained, and one sachet of Sage descaling powder goes into 1 liter of warm water in the tank. Sage notes that any maintenance other than cleaning should be done by an authorized Sage service center.
- Water filter: replace it after 3 months or 40 liters (60 liters with soft water, hardness level 2). The ClaroSwiss water filter fits the Dual Boiler.
- Grinder: brush the burrs and the grind outlet regularly; never use the dishwasher or abrasive cleaners.

Which coffee?
A setup like this is made for learning, so start with a coffee that forgives a little. Our Houseblend is a sweet espresso blend with a full body, low acidity and notes of dark chocolate and cacao nibs, and it carries milk well. Once your shots are consistent, try our Seasonal Blend: fruitier and livelier, the kind of espresso you get in a specialty bar. For the evening, our Colombia Sugar Cane Specialty Decaf has a full body and low acidity.
Learn it at OR Academy
A manual machine rewards technique. With the Dynamic Duo from OR Coffee, a place in a Home Barista Workshop at OR Academy is included, as stated on the product page: a group session where you practice dosing, tamping and milk texturing. Pick the date and location in the workshop calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Dual Boiler have a built-in grinder?
No. That is why the Dynamic Duo comes with the Smart Grinder Pro.
Can I brew and steam at the same time?
Yes. The espresso boiler and the steam boiler work independently.
Which grind setting do I start with for espresso?
Sage suggests setting 12 in the espresso range (1 to 30), then finer or coarser depending on how fast the shot runs. Aim for 25 to 30 seconds.
Can I descale it myself?
Yes, through the descale menu as described in the user guide. Sage also says that maintenance beyond cleaning belongs with an authorized service center.
Does it make cold brew?
Sage does not list cold brew for the Dual Boiler. For cold brew from the touchscreen, see our guide to cold brew at home with Sage Cold Extraction.
