La Marzocco Linea Micra review: a café group under your kitchen cabinets

La Marzocco Linea Micra review: a café group under your kitchen cabinets

The Linea Micra is the smallest machine La Marzocco makes with two boilers and an integrated group: 33.8 cm high and 29 cm wide, so it fits under most kitchen cabinets. The group is built the same way as on La Marzocco’s café machines, you brew with a paddle on the machine, and temperature, steam power, pre-brewing and on/off schedules are set in the La Marzocco Home app.

It is for one or two people who drink a few milk drinks a day and want La Marzocco build quality on a home counter. It comes in seven colors, with the same machine inside each one.

Our baristas’ verdict

  • Best at: espresso and a few milk drinks a day, with a café-built group in a compact body. It heats up quickly and pulls flat whites back to back without waiting.
  • Right size for: one or two people.
  • Pick another model if: you make milk drinks for a full household or a small office. The Linea Mini R has more steam in reserve.
  • Plan for: no display or shot timer on the machine, so keep a scale or the app at hand.

Strengths and weak points

Strengths

  • Two insulated boilers (0.25 L coffee, 1.6 L steam) with dual PID: brew and steam at the same time.
  • Integrated group built like La Marzocco’s café machines.
  • App with schedules, pre-brewing and steam power setting.
  • Compact: 29 cm wide, 33.8 cm high, and it runs from a 2-liter water reservoir.
  • Convertible portafilter (spouts or bottomless) and an insulated steam wand.
  • Seven colors.

Weak points

  • No display or shot timer on the machine.
  • Smaller steam boiler than the Linea Mini R (1.6 L vs 3 L).
  • Costs more than dual boilers from other brands.

Options and how to combine them

There are no options to fit on the Micra; the choices are around it.

  • Color: brushed stainless steel, black, white, grey, blue, red or yellow. The machine inside is the same in every color.
  • Grinder: a single dose or on-demand espresso grinder with fine adjustment, for example the La Marzocco Pico.
  • Brew by weight: the Micra pairs with La Marzocco’s brew-by-weight scale, so the shot stops at the yield you set.
  • Included with the machine: an Easy Espresso Discovery Box and a place in a Home Barista Workshop at OR Academy.

How to combine them: pick the color for your kitchen and put the grinder budget next to the machine, because the grinder decides as much about the cup as the machine does. Use the coffees in the Easy Espresso Discovery Box to dial in your Micra, and practice your technique at the Home Barista Workshop.

Frequently asked questions

How many drinks a day is it made for?

La Marzocco gives no daily figure. Our baristas see the Micra as the machine for one or two people who drink a few milk drinks a day: it pulls flat whites back to back without waiting. If you make milk drinks for a full household or a small office, the Mini R has more steam in reserve.

Does it need a water connection?

No. The Micra runs from a 2-liter water reservoir, so you do not need to plumb it in. Under kitchen cabinets, leave room to fill the reservoir.

How much maintenance does it need?

Backflush the group with the cleaning basket from the box; the La Marzocco Home app also lets you run an auto-backflush. A hot water spout is there to rinse the portafilter between shots. Our product page gives a warranty of 2 years.

What about installation?

The Micra comes with an installation and user guide, a convertible portafilter, 14 g and 17 g baskets and a cleaning basket, a convex tamper and a 12 oz milk pitcher. Our start recipe: 17 g of coffee in, 36 g of espresso out, in 27 to 32 seconds, coffee boiler at 93 °C, pre-brewing on.
